Lobert’s use of the sublime is exemplified in this painting where we find a background of black and midground of red battling for definition amidst a foreground of lush and opaque stark white. Luminescent strokes placed atop color forge a certain neutrality as the artist negotiates feelings by covering them with something familiar, an equalizing tone that is both erasure and renewal. Uniquely layered to create a three-dimensional feel, the color becomes both refreshment and reminder of the blank slate that came before, a continual rebirth through hue.
